APP for ZODION
✖ CHARACTER:
Name: Masaomi Kida
Canon: Durarara!!
PB/Image: convenient fanart! (also here is a kawaii gif from canon)
Info links: DRRR wiki
Canon Point: post-vol 6
Gender & Sex: male/male
Age: 16 at canon point + over a year in Zodion = 17 mentally & 19 physically (unless the aging up would reset?)
Birthdate/Sign: June 19 / Gemini -- canon!
Tattoo: 3in or so at the small of his back
Suitability: At home, Kida was a very sexually aware, self-sufficient young man. A lot of Kida’s humor is based around love and sexuality and it’s implied that he was at the least aware of the sexual potential of his relationships even in middle school. Additionally he’s run a street gang and recently ran way from home to live and work with his girlfriend, so he’s more than used to taking care of himself. It's also noted in canon that his parents "don't care what he does" even to the point of dropping out of private school and disappearing, so he's probably been in charge of himself for the better part of his life.
On top of that he spent 13 months in Zodion before, in which he was very active in sex work and even co-owned Striaton for awhile just prior to leaving. He is more than happy to fit in.
Power: When he was here before he’d started with air summoning and built up to add channeling and force field. :> I was wondering if he’d be starting out from square one again with this or not? IF SO I’ll go with air channeling!
Personality: Masaomi Kida is a lesson in duality and the ability for opposites to exist within the same space. He is, to the casual observer, a noisy, charismatic, cheerful and flamboyant flirt of a boy -- the type who plays class clown for the sake of hearing himself talk and gains notoriety, if not popularity. Though he doesn't excel to an extreme in most things, having average grades and average skill in both academic and extracurricular fields, he is friendly and outgoing. His mouth is always running a constant patter of flirting, teasing, and bad jokes. He is generally well-liked if not particularly close to the people around him and surrounds himself in a sea of enthusiastic silliness. His favorite subject is love and all things related, and at most times some form of love is at the forefront of his rambling. He easily leads his friends around, sweeping them up in the uncontrolled current of his energy and dragging them alone for the ride.
However, though this side of his personality is partially genuine, it's merely the surface of the complex depths he makes every effort to hide. The extroverted, loud Masaomi is less the Masaomi that exists here and now and more the Masaomi that he longs to be. The true Masaomi is something of a different story. He's more introverted, stewing in his thoughts and feelings rather than voicing them, and sitting on anxieties until they thicken into a thick, choking concoction of pessimism and self-doubt. He is very unsure of and critical of himself, often feeling that his faults and mistakes far outweigh his virtues, and assuming that other people will think the same if they were to find out about his true self. When faced with a crisis, he tends to withdraw, back off, and hope for someone else to pull him out of it and tell him what to do. Although as the series progresses his ability to face his problems and stand up for what he wants and believes in improves, he is still often indecisive and avoidant of all but the most serious of issues.
And his very avoidance is part of what causes him to question himself, leading into a vicious cycle of self-doubt. It began when he was unable to make himself walk into an obvious, potentially fatal trap in order to rescue his girlfriend, Saki Mikajima, when he was in middle school. Rather than becoming the brave hero, when she was in danger he looked for advice from someone else (Izaya in this case, an informant that Saki was close to), then froze and ran from the situation at the last moment. After that, though she was saved by someone else, Masaomi’s life was defined by guilt. He left both Saki and Yellow Flag Orchestra, the youth gang whose troubles had ended in her injury. He avoids both her and thinking about what happened, and instead decides to abandon the Masaomi that existed in middle school and instead reconnect with his elementary school bestie Mikado. He and Mikado make friends with Anri, and Kida showers them both in excessive friendly attention in order to drown out the reality of his abnormal life and keep them from seeing it. When the underworld takes them all in and his ruse fails, he rejoins Saki and runs away to avoid talking about his issues with Mikado & Anri.
Although he is avoidant of problems, Masaomi is unable to be entirely avoidant of people in general. Due to his lack of trust in himself, he is very dependant on the affection of others. His relationship with Saki is based around the fact that she openly, stubbornly accepts every part of him and allows him to be emotionally dependant on that approval. Before the incident in which she was injured, he also depended heavily on Izaya, since Masaomi kept ahead in the youth gang game by getting information from him. However, knowing that Izaya manipulated both him and Saki into their situation, the two of them have changed to resent the man, which in Masaomi's case manifests as verbal aggression at every opportunity, although Izaya seems to find it nothing but amusing. During his time at Raira Academy for high school, Masaomi depended on Mikado and Anri, as their friendship, and his long-term friendship with Mikado in general, enabled him to pretend at the normal, happy life he'd wanted. Generally, when he is unsure of anything, Masaomi rarely makes a move without seeking out someone else's advice first. without another person to guide him, he tends to flounder and stew in his insecurities.
All this considered though, Kida is still a naturally needy individual regardless of his past. He is bold and a “hero” type, always the sort to stand up to bullies and go at things full tile. However, his interests tend towards the nerdy and intellectual and what we know of his childhood reflects this. While he is very silly and energetic, he also sticks almost entirely to Mikado, with the two of them being an inseparable duo all by themselves. When Yellow Flag Orchestra forms itself around him, Kida is stunned and not sure what to do with a leadership position. In fact, he considers his popularity something he crafted deliberately to combat loneliness. Although he later becomes a very skilled street brawler, Kida also dislikes that kind of violence and tried to prevent it. He would much rather live a cheerful and peaceful life than that of an underworld fighter, but he is willing to put his life on the line to do what he thinks is right for the people he loves. He has a huge knight complex in that regard, and considers sacrificing himself a small price to pay for protecting the people and things that make him happy.
** Z Development Shit that wasn't actually in the app: This is where Kida stood upon entry to Z the first time. In Zodion, Kida went through quite a lot of positive development. While at first he was very uncomfortable with the idea of a new world that demanded sexual activity as “worship”, he quickly realized that Zodion itself was a place of opportunity. Here, he didn’t have to be slave to his past. Here he could be whoever he wanted to be, make whatever friends he liked, and live a life free of the downward spirals he was caught in at home. Over the course of thirteen months he made important social connections, started a very lucrative career as first a personal assistant to Tony Stark and then a waiter-slash-high-class-prostitute at Striaton (and a friend of N Harmonia in the process), and acquired an apartment full of nice things. He started dressing in a more forward manner and gained a lot of confidence through success in friendships and work. Eventually, just before being dropped, he even inherited the cafe upon N’s departure, sharing ownership with Shizuo.
In Zodion, Kida considered himself a happy, healthy, well-to-do person. He gained a lot of positive relationships in his time, either through work, through events, or through sheer stubborn affection. He was annoying and forward on the network, but it gained him a lot of connections that he happily pursued. Whether it was him pushing his way into Gokudera’s life or being pulled along by Claire’s oddness, he wasn’t short on people to keep his need for interaction satisfied. His social experience was broad and improved his ability to think of himself as someone worthy and capable of being close to and having fun with others again.
That wasn’t to say he was free of negative relationships or bad things, though. Izaya continued to be a problem for him, though a few successes made Kida less afraid of him and more simply annoyed and frustrated except in the worst of times. Additionally he had antagonistic or just annoying relationships with a few others and even a failed romantic relationship. While they were downpoints, they were also a way to vent his frustrations and to grow more steady in his self-image and his awareness of his own wants and needs.
Still, between new things and the opportunities he took to improve and sort out his friendships with Mikado and Anri, Kida’s life in Zodion was good overall, and a precious source of positive growth. He left Z more confident, more relaxed, and more open than he came to it. While he is still Kida, still insecure and self-critical and prone to mood swings, he has improved as a person and is more stable now by far. Reentering the world would be, in his opinion, coming home. To Kida, he’d found the place he was meant to fit in and he had no desire to ever leave.

"Zodion" First-Person Network Entry: [The video feed shows a face that may be familiar to some. It’s been a long time and the bare newbie apartment backdrop isn’t his old place, but the big stupid grin and wildly gesturing hands haven’t changed one bit.]
Hey, Zodion! Looks like I went and disappeared for a few months, huh? I’ll have to scold the Twelve about that later for sure. It’s not a vacation when I was only home for a breath. Anyway, that’d be a pretty lame vacation no matter how long it was, since I’d be missing all of your beautiful, shining faces!
So, I’m back! If you don’t know me, my name’s Kida Masaomi and I’m a top tier friend maker and personal entertainer! Anyone who needs a smile can call me any time!
If you do know me, do me a favor and shoot me a line, huh? Gotta take inventory and all that. Thanks!
"Zodionlogs" Third-Person Prose Entry: His dreams were vivid. The streets of Ikebukuro smelled the same, looked the same as he always remembered. For a bit, it felt as if he was waking up from a long, strange sleep. His feet hit the pavement, and he wondered why it was that he felt so out of place. But the feeling was gone within a second or two, and his thoughts went right back to the problem at hand; Mikado. Mikado, who he couldn’t approach. Mikado, who he just wanted to see smile again. But the rift between them was far too wide. He could only seek out Anri and hope he’d find the bridge to his best friend soon. After all, Saki thought he could do it and that he should. He wouldn’t let her down.
It only lasted a moment. Before he could even take and release one slow breath, he jerked awake on an unfamiliar and uncomfortable bed. For a moment he was disoriented, and then his tattoo began to sting.
How did he get here?
Where did he go?
The tears that had been on his face at home (in his dream?) were still there, and he rubbed them away with a sleepy grumble. He sat up, glancing around until he recognised the setup as the new entrance at the Luminar. So he’d gone “home”, was it? For only a instant --
Ah, no. He’d gone back where he came from. Zodion was “home”. It had been for quite some time. Kida felt panic rise in his chest as he stood, checked his tattoo, and went to retrieve his things from the podium. How long had he been gone? How much would he have lost in this time? Would he be remembered? Just the thought of having been taken away from this place was terrifying. He didn’t want to go back. He didn’t want to forget. This place was the place he belonged, where he’d sorted things out with Mikado and Anri and where he’d made “Kida Masaomi” a name he could be proud of for the first time in years. If he lost all he’d gained, he’d only be the broken boy he was on that dim city street.
As he made his way back to the city he opened the network with practiced but shaky fingers, checking the date and doing a cursory scroll through the recent posts for news.
Five months.
Who was still here? Who wasn’t? Was it really nearly over?
He certainly didn’t want it to be. Still, the new Kida wasn’t going to freak out and cry about it. He’d worry, but he’d take his niche back by sheer stubborn force if necessary, and he wouldn’t let go. This was home, and he’d fight for his place till the end. He took a deep breath, pasted on his biggest of fake smiles, and went to post.
